Abstract

|
Two patients with clinical and laboratory features of disseminated intravascular coagulation were presented.
Underlying causes were acute gangrenous appendicitis.
Petechia, purpura and bleeding from the drain site were observed in each case.
One case disclosed mild and the other, severe anemia. Significant thrombocytopenia, prolonged prothrombin time, and prolongation of thrombin time were present, as well as positive F.D.P. tests. However plasma fibrinogen levels were not depressed.
Treatment were appendectomy and supplemented with ipsilon, massive antibiotics, and transfusion of platelet concentrate and whole blood. Heparin therapy was not done. Improvement was manifested by the cessation of bleeding and restoration of prothrombin time, platelets counts, and F.D.P. test toward normal within third to fourth days after appropriate treatment.
A brief review was made on disseminated intravascular coagulation.
